I continued to read my book, finding a spot in the corner, flicking through the pages spending the next couple of hours in conversation with the author.  My friend, an entrepreneur, saw an opportunity in this new found crowd and chose to network.

At the end of the day, he had made some 71 contacts whom he had exchanged business cards with.

Here is a guy who made the most of a given situation, to network, get to know people and look for any and every angle he can to continually expand on his business.

Here is the kicker.

This was in Dubai at around 4pm when the tremors of a neighbouring countries’ earth quake had professionals evacuate from their buildings and spill on to the street.

When most people (including myself) merely saw a crowd, he saw an opportunity.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Just take a moment and ask yourself, where are the opportunities in your life? Have you got your eyes open for them? And if you do, what are you willing to do about it?

When opportunities come, you take it.  Even better, you make it.

You have to

a) choose to see it

b) be willing to put in the effort.

Where did time ago?

How did this happen?

What?

I can’t believe this!

I haven’t been over worked.

I hadn’t been inundated with urgent things to do

Sure I’ve been busy, but not as busy as the president.

A whole month?

These were a handful of a thousand thoughts that I felt were slapping my sense into taking notice of what just happened.

I couldn’t believe it. It is the 14^th of the month.

30 whole days ago (and feeling like it was just last week) I told a bunch of friends that I would send a manuscript summary for an upcoming book.

In the midst of needing to do what I had chosen to be important (completing and sending through a summary manuscript), life just got in the way.   Let me refine it a little bit to be fair, distractions got in the way.  And if I was to be absolutely truthful, the fact is, I allowed for distractions to get in the way.

Events happen all the time, every hour of every day.  If we don’t pay attention to things that aren’t really important (at least not when we have a clear project or goal ahead of us), then they would be mere events.  We move on with absolute focus until we complete our set project.

Events only ever turn into Distractions, when we consciously and deliberately take our eyes of the ball.  I am deliberate in saying conscious, and very conscious of having used the word deliberate.  And I stand by what I say.

Take me for instance; I was clearly aware of what was important. I was conscious of it.  No excuses.

So when I am now staring down the ever so dark well of lost time, (an entire month that I will never get back), I consciously took my eyes of the ball (and yes my friends, when we admit this to ourselves we are swallowing a very bitter pill).

The best time for us all to have done something will always be some time in the past.  But there isn’t much we can do about the past except for own our mistakes, learn from them and ensure that we don’t swallow the same bitter pill again.

Now is as good as ever to a) regain focus on what you must get done and b) get on with it.

Do it.

Think of what you have been putting off? Going to the gym? Working on your very own manuscript? Updating your CV? Making those phone calls? Enrolling to that language course? Getting in front of people and pitching your idea? Setting up your business?

Don’t let another month, let alone another day slip you by.

In the words of one of Rolling Stones most memorable hits, “Time waits for no one”

It won’t wait for me. It won’t wait for you.

I have a manuscript to go and complete.

What do you need to do?

Go make it happen. Now!

Start by respecting others, caring for more than just you, letting go of resentment, giving without keeping accounts and being the bigger person.

Do more than talk a big talk.

Walk it.

“I tried, but didn’t get through” he said.

My immediate thought and question to him was, “and?”

I didn’t get connected with the person whose name you had written, and so…. (His voice diminishing into an awkward silence)

As he ran out of words to justify his (nonexistent) reason, all that kept flashing in my mind were the words ‘You just don’t stop’

And so being the person who speaks his mind, I gave my barista friend a piece of it.

Dude, “You just don’t stop.  You just DON’T stop”

Speak to any winners, and they will tell you that this rings true for them.  They got what they wanted in life because they simply chose to never stop

Everyone faces blocks, challenges and failures.  There is nothing special about my barista friend, you, me or anyone out there facing tough times.

But winners just don’t stop. They go on and on and on (for however long they need to).

If you want something bad enough, then you just don’t stop.

So what if you are faced with a brick wall?

So what if you come across a dead end?

So what if you walked down the wrong path so far?

It doesn’t matter

You just don’t stop because you have your goal in mind. It is your chosen destination. That is your end point.  No other!

Winners never give up short of their goal.  They just don’t stop. They can’t. They won’t.

You shouldn’t either.

It is the reason why giants like Coca Cola, Pfizer, Virgin, Vodafone, Godaddy continuously and relentlessly advertise, even though they are world renowned.

Got talent?

Got skill?

Got knowledge?

Got a message to share?

It won’t be worth much unless you learn how to effectively market (yourself)

Without marketing, your message doesn’t hold much value.

How can it if  there is no audience to see or hear it?

The game is all about Marketing.

So develop and continuously refine this key element – your marketing skill.
